WHAT IS THIS ALL ABOUT?
Like every history, the story of Anne Arundel County is more than a collection of names and dates. It's a story told by the homes where people lived, the diaries they wrote, the newspapers they read, the things they saved, and the things they discarded.
Sometimes, children do not make this connection. To many of them, history is a bunch of dates and strange names to be memorized. We designed this activity to help them get beyond that . . . to make up their own minds about what is important and be able to support their decisions with solid facts. We also want kids to see that people, not text books, create history.
WHAT ARE THE KIDS GOING TO DO?
The kids are going to electronically visit places throughout Anne Arundel County on the Internet to find out why they are important to the history of the county. This kind of exploration is sometimes called a Web Quest, or Net Investigation all different names for using information found on the web as a resource for learning. The sites where they will go have been chosen carefully for authenticity, readability, and content.
Before they begin, kids will know that they have a real-life task to complete. They become part of an imaginary Field Trip Committee at their school. They have to plan a field trip in Anne Arundel County that will help kids in their school experience what they feel are the most important historic sites in the county. They will be able to create a travel poster about the field trip. And they will complete a follow-up activity to convince the school administration that their trip is the most worthwhile.
FOR WHAT AGES WAS THE ACTIVITY DESIGNED?
This Internet Exploration was designed for students in grades four through eight, but can be adapted for use with other ages.
